Work Permit But No LMO
If you're planning to apply to work in Canada, you should be aware that there are certain jobs that require a work permit but do not require a labour market opinion (LMO) from Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC). The following is a brief description of the types of people that fit into this category.
Jobs That Require a Work Permit But No LMO
- Workers under international agreements: This includes all sorts of professionals, such as investors, traders and other business people who are coming to Canada under international agreements, such as NAFTA.
- Entrepreneurs and intra-company trainees: This particularly includes individuals who will provide significant benefits to Canada's economy.
- Exchange program participants: This covers student exchange programs, teacher exchange programs, and any other similar international reciprocal work program.
- Co-op students: Foreign students who need to do co-op work placements as part of their study program.
- Spouses: In particular, the spouses of foreign workers or full-time students.
- Academics and students: This includes academics and students who are not part of a co-op or exchange program.
- Religious workers: Those who come to Canada to work for religious and/or non-profit organizations.
- Others: Certain exemptions are made for refugees and other special cases who need to work to support themselves while waiting for a determination in their case.
