Special Considerations for Occupations Under Pressure

Canada has developed a new process to assist employers who would like to bring in temporary foreign workers to help fill vacancies in occupations that are under pressure due to labour market shortages. In particular, Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) and Service Canada (SC) have developed regional lists of occupations under pressure that will help speed up the hiring process. If the type of vacancy and employer is trying to fill is on this list, they will be able to skip the lengthy and costly process of seeking a Canadian resident for the position and go straight to recruiting a foreign temporary worker.

Hiring Guidelines for Occupations Under Pressure in Canada

To find out whether the occupation(s) you would like to fill qualifies for this program; please consult the regional occupations list for your area. These lists may be found on Human Resources and Social Development Canada's Foreign Worker web site.

If the vacancy you would like to fill is on your regional list, you only need to advertise the position for a minimal amount of time (2-3 weeks). However, you still need to satisfy other temporary foreign worker requirements.

Advertising Requirements for Occupations Under Pressure

Even if they qualify for the expedited hiring process, employers must still meet the following requirements:

  • Advertise the position for at least 7 days on Canada's national Job Bank
  • Demonstrate that they have been undertaking ongoing recruitment efforts via other means, such as newspaper ads, online ads, ads in professional journals and publications and so forth.

If you would like to learn more advertising for occupations under pressure, please visit Human Resources and Social Development Canada's Foreign Worker web site.
