Immigration to Canada - Provincial Nominee

If you're someone who has the skills, education and experience to begin contributing to the Canadian economy immediately upon your arrival in the country, you may qualify to enter Canada under the Provincial Nominee Program. This program allows Canadian provinces and territories to nominate certain individuals to settle in their province or territory.

Provincial Nominee Program - Who Can Apply

To be considered for the program, you must apply to the particular province or territory in which you would like to live. Acceptance is based on the province or territory's needs as well as whether or not officials are convinced your intention is to actually settle in that province or territory.

Provincial Nominee Program - Participating Provinces and Territories

The following provinces and territories are currently part of the Provincial Nominee Program:

  • Alberta
  • Manitoba
  • Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Ontario
  • Saskatchewan
  • British Columbia
  • New Brunswick
  • Nova Scotia
  • Prince Edward Island
  • Yukon

Provincial Nominee Program - How to Apply

The first thing you should do is find out what your job is called in Canada. Citizenship and Immigration Canada's (CIC) web site has a tool called Working in Canada to help you do this. It will also help you see what wages and job opportunities are like in the province or territory in which you would like to work.

Once you choose a province, you need to seek a nomination. CIC's web site details the process for how you can do this. After receiving your certificate of nomination, you need to fill out an application form, pay the appropriate fee and then wait to see if further information is required.

For more information on the Provincial Nominee Program-including eligibility, application procedures and processing times-please visit your nearest visa office or go to CIC's web site.
