Immigration to Canada - Sponsoring Family
Once you successfully immigrate to Canada and become established in the country, it probably won't be long before you begin thinking about sponsoring your family members to come to Canada as well. Citizenship and Immigration Canada ( CIC ) welcomes such efforts and does everything it can to facilitate such reunions.
Sponsoring Your Family - Eligible Family Members
Once you become a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, you are eligible to sponsor your spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, dependent child (including adopted children), parent or grandparent so that they might become a permanent resident as well. The term CIC uses to describe immigrants who are eligible to sponsor family members is "Family Class."
Sponsoring Your Family - Responsibilities
As a permanent resident in Canada, it is incumbent on you to make every effort to support yourself and your family members who are also in the country. Therefore, if you decide to sponsor a relative to immigrate to Canada, you must also take financial responsibility for him or her as well, at least until your relative is able to begin supporting him or herself.
Sponsoring Your Family - Processes
The first step toward sponsoring your family is to become a citizen of Canada or a permanent resident. Then you can choose between two different sponsorship processes. The first is use to sponsor your immediate family members, including your spouse, conjugal partner, common-law partner and/or your dependent children. The second process is used to sponsor parents, grandparents and other eligible relatives.
There are two different processes for sponsoring your family. One process is used for sponsoring your spouse, conjugal or common-law partner and/or dependent children. Another process is used to sponsor other eligible relatives.
