Commercial Janitors and Caretakers
Commercial Janitors and Caretakers maintain and clean the
exterior and interior of commercial buildings and their surrounding
grounds. They are employed by educational institutions,
building management companies, recreational and shopping facilities,
healthcare facilities, religious facilities, and other industrial
or other establishments.
Main Duties of Commercial Janitors and Caretakers
Commercial Janitors and Caretakers perform some or all of
these duties:
Operate
industrial vacuum cleaners to remove dirt, scraps,
heavy debris, and other refuse
Wash
windows, interior walls and ceilings
Sweep,
mop, scrub and wax hallways, floors and stairs
Empty
trash cans and other waste containers
Cut
grass and tend grounds
Clean
ice and snow from parking areas and walkways
Make
adjustments and minor repairs to cooling, heating, ventilatingelectrical
and plumbing systems, and contact tradepersons for major repairs.
Clean
and disinfect washrooms and fixtures
Routine
maintenance jobs, such as drywall repair and painting
Water
and tend to plants
Move
heavy equipment, furniture and supplies
Ensure
that security and safety measures are in place in the establishment
May
supervise other workers
Employment
requirements of Commercial Janitors and Caretakers
Completion
of secondary school may be required.
Some
occupations in this unit group require previous maintenance
and cleaning experience.
