Canada Welcomes Civil Engineers Under New ELMO Pilot Project
Canada is making it easier for civil engineers to enter the country through its new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project. In Canada, civil engineers plan, design and manage the construction of buildings, earth structures, roads, airports, railways, transit facilities, bridges, canals, dams, ports and sanitation projects. In Canada, civil engineers typically find work with engineering consulting companies, government departments and construction firms.
Civil Engineer Duties
According to the ELMO description, civil engineers in Canada perform a variety of duties. These include:
- Researching and consulting with clients and other members of the engineering team
- Planning and designing major civil projects
- Developing construction specifications and procedures
- Evaluating and recommending construction materials
- Interpreting and approving civil design work
- Conducting field services for civil works
- Ensuring construction plans meet local codes and guidelines
- Conducting feasibility studies, environmental impact studies and other assessments
- Conducting technical analyses of survey and field data
- Acting as site supervisor for surveying or construction work
- Preparing contracts and evaluating tenders
- Supervising technicians and other engineers
Civil Engineer Qualifications
ELMO specifies that civil engineers seeking to work in Canada must have the following qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related engineering discipline (in some situations, a master's degree or doctorate may also be required)
- Three to four years of supervised engineering work experience
- A license from a provincial or territorial professional association of engineers
Civil Engineer Wages
According to ELMO, civil engineers earn slightly higher wages in British Columbia, where the average rate is $43.64/hour. Wages for civil engineers in Alberta are only slightly lower at $42.19/hour.
