Canada Welcomes Dental Technicians Under New ELMO Pilot Project
Canada is making it easier for dental technicians to enter the country through its new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project. In Canada, dental technicians work with dentists, orthodontists, and other specialists to design and fabricate dentures and other dental devices. They also perform similar functions in dental laboratories.
Dental Technician Duties
According to ELMO, dental technicians in Canada help dentists design, fabricate or repair a variety of dental devices, including: dentures, crowns, inlays, onlays, clasps, bands and implants. Dental technicians in Canada also consult with dentists or specialists on problematic cases, train and supervise other dental technicians and perform other supervisory and administrative functions.
Dental Technician Qualifications
ELMO specifies that dental technicians seeking to work in Canada must have completed a college program in dental technology or at least four years of on-the-job training under the supervision of a dental technician. With the exception of Manitoba, every province and territory in Canada requires dental technicians to register with a regulatory body.
Dental Technician Wages
According to ELMO, wages for dental technician vary substantially according to region. Dental technicians earn the highest wages in northern British Columbia ($22.80/hour) and the lowest wages in northern Alberta ($17.94/hour).
