Canada Welcomes Electrical and Electronics Engineers
Under New ELMO Pilot Project
A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project is making it easier for electrical and electronics engineers to enter Canada. In Canada, electrical and electronics engineers are employed by a variety of utilities, manufacturers, government branches, communications companies and consulting firms. They perform several functions, such as designing, researching, evaluating and testing electrical and electronic equipment and systems.
Electrical and Electronics Engineer Duties
According to ELMO, electrical and electronics engineers in Canada may be called upon to:
- Research the feasibility, design, construction and operation of electrical generation and distribution networks
- Prepare estimates for the design and installation of electrical and electronic systems and equipment
- Design electronic and electrical systems, circuits and equipment
- Supervise the installation of electrical and electronic systems and equipment
- Develop maintenance and operating standards and procedures
- Troubleshoot electrical or electronic failures
- Prepare contracts and evaluate tenders
- Supervise other engineering and electrical specialists
Electrical and Electronics Engineer Qualifications
ELMO specifies that e lectrical and electronics engineers seeking to work in Canada must have the following qualifications:
- A bachelor's degree in electrical or electronics engineering OR a related engineering discipline (in some cases a master's or doctorate may also be required)
- Licensing by a provincial or territorial association of professional engineers. Electrical and electronics engineers are only eligible for registration after they have graduated from an accredited institution, completed 3-4 years of supervised work experience, and passed a professional practice examination.
Electrical and Electronics Engineer Wages
According to ELMO, wages for electrical and electronics engineers are highest in British Columbia ($41.50/hour). Electronics and electrical engineers earn slightly less in Alberta, where the average wage is $38.57/hour.
