Canada Welcomes Food Service Supervisors Under New ELMO Pilot Project
A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project is making it easier for food service supervisors to enter Canada. In Canada, food service supervisors oversee the preparation and serving of food in hospitals, nursing homes, catering companies and other food service enterprises.
Food Service Supervisor Duties
According to ELMO, in Canada food service supervisors are typically expected to:
- Oversee food preparation and serving staff
- Order ingredients and other kitchen supplies
- Schedule food prep and service staff
- Plan menus, including alternate menus for people with special dietary needs
- Ensure that food prep and service meet appropriate quality standards
- Select, hire and train food prep and service staff
- Devise and implement policies, budgets and procedures for food preparation and service
- Create food preparation and service systems that maximize efficiency and reduce waste
Food Service Supervisor Qualifications
ELMO specifies that food service supervisors who would like to work in Canada must have a high school diploma or equivalent and a diploma in food service administration or a related discipline. In addition, they must have several years of experience in the food preparation and service industry.
Food Service Supervisor Engineer Wages
According to ELMO, wages for food service supervisors vary according to region. They range from $11.45/hour in northern British Columbia to $14.55 in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
