A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project is making it easier for heavy-duty equipment mechanics to enter Canada. In Canada, heavy-duty equipment mechanics are responsible for maintaining, repairing and overhauling heavy-duty equipment used in the mining, forestry, land clearing, landscaping and oil and gas industries. A number of different companies hire heavy-duty equipment mechanics, including oil and gas service companies, heavy equipment dealers, railway companies and forestry companies.

Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanics Duties

According to ELMO, in Canada heavy-duty equipment mechanics are typically responsible for:

  • Inspecting heavy-duty equipment-such as cranes, bulldozers and graders-to ensure proper performance
  • Diagnosing and repairing defective or damaged equipment
  • Maintaining and testing heavy-duty equipment to ensure the manufacturer's specifications are met
  • Servicing and attaching auxiliary components and attachments

Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanics Qualifications

ELMO specifies that heavy-duty equipment mechanics who want to be certified to work in Canada must meet the following qualifications:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent
  • Completion of a 3-5 year apprenticeship program OR over four years experience in the trade as well as college or industry courses

Trade certification is voluntary in every province and territory except Alberta and Quebec.

Heavy-Duty Equipment Mechanics Engineer Wages

According to ELMO, wages for heavy-duty equipment mechanics are highest in Fort McMurray ($40.24) and other parts of Alberta and lowest in the Thompson-Okanagan-Kooteny region ($21.19).
