Canada Welcomes Industrial Electricians Under New ELMO Pilot Project
A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project is making it easier for industrial electricians to enter Canada. In Canada, industrial electricians are responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing electrical equipment and associated infrastructure. The types of companies that are in need of industrial electricians include electrical contractors, factory maintenance departments, power plants, lumber mills and mines.
Industrial Electrician Duties
According to ELMO, industrial electricians working in Canada must be able to:
- Read and interpret wiring schematics, blueprints, electrical code specifications and other technical documents
- Install, inspect, repair or replace a variety of electrical components, such as electrical wiring, coaxial cable, switches, lighting fixtures and fibre optic cables
- Test and maintain electrical and electronic equipment, such as motors, generators, alternators, transformers and industrial storage batteries
- Troubleshoot electric and electronic control systems
- Perform regular maintenance and calibrations
Industrial Electrician Qualifications
- ELMO specifies that industrial electricians who want to work in Canada must have:
- Received a high school diploma or equivalent
- Completed a 4-5 year apprenticeship program OR worked for over 5 years in the trade and taken some related college or industry courses
Trade certification is voluntary in British Columbia, but it is mandatory in Alberta.
Industrial Electrician Wages
According to ELMO, wages for industrial electricians vary significantly depending on where you work. Wages are highest in Fort McMurray ($33.03) and lowest in St. Paul/Lloydminster ($23.99).
