Canada Welcomes Foreign Machinists Under New ELMO Pilot Project

A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project makes it easier for machinists to enter Canada as temporary workers. In Canada, machinists cut or grind metal, plastic and other materials on specialized machines to manufacture products or parts with great precision. All sorts of manufacturing companies are currently seeking machinists, including those that make aircraft, automobiles, automotive parts, engines and other products made of metal.

Machinist Duties

  • According to ELMO, machinists in Canada typically are called upon to:
  • Read and interpret blueprints and other technical documents
  • Make precise measurements and calculations
  • Operate a variety of machining tools, including those that saw, turn, bore, mill, thread and grind
  • Assemble and adjust machined parts to ensure a proper fit
  • Verify and measure machined parts to ensure they meet specifications
  • Supervise other machinists and tool operators

Machinist Qualifications

ELMO specifies that machinists who want to work in Canada must have completed:

  • High school or equivalent
  • A 4-year apprenticeship program OR over 4 years of supervised work experience in the trade as well as related secondary school, industry or college courses.

Trade certification is available but voluntary across Canada. Inter-provincial certification is also available.

Machinist Wages

According to ELMO, wages for machinists vary significantly by region. Fort McMurray offers the highest wages at $28.44/hour. The lowest wages are in British Columbia's Thompson/Okanagan/Kootenay region ($20.35).
