A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project is making it easier for industrial meat cutters to enter Canada. In Canada, industrial meat cutters prepare beef, pork, poultry and other types of meat for processing, packaging or marketing to retailers. The types of companies that are currently seeking industrial meat cutters include slaughterhouses, meat packing plants and other meat packaging and processing facilities.
Industrial Meat Cutter Duties
According to ELMO, industrial meat cutters duties in Canada typically include:
· Primary cutting of poultry carcasses or sides or quarters of beef, pork, lamb and other animal carcasses in order to prepare them for further cutting, processing and packaging
· De-boning meat
· Preparing specific cuts of beef, pork, poultry or other meats for industrial, commercial and other wholesale uses
Industrial Meat Cutter Qualifications
ELMO specifies that industrial meat cutters who want to work in Canada must have:
· Received a high school diploma or equivalent
· Completed an industrial meat cutting course OR worked as an industrial butcher or trimmer for a significant period of time
Industrial Meat Cutter Wages
According to ELMO, wages for industrial meat cutters are fairly uniform across the various sub-regions. Wages are slightly higher in the Calgary/Banff/Drumheller region ($15.76/hour). The lowest average wage is in the St. Paul/Lloydminster area ($14.36/hour).
