A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project makes it easier for mechanical engineers to enter Canada as temporary workers. In Canada, mechanical engineers design, develop, install, operate and maintain a variety of mechanical systems for power generation, transportation and heating and ventilation. The types of enterprises currently seeking mechanical engineers in Canada include power, water and gas utilities, manufacturing companies and transportation companies.
Mechanical Engineer Duties
According to ELMO, mechanical engineers in Canada typically:
- Conduct feasibility studies
- Oversee the planning and design of mechanical systems
- Manage the installation of mechanical systems
- Create standards for maintenance and upkeep of mechanical systems
- Troubleshoot problems with mechanical systems
- Prepare contracts and evaluate tenders for maintenance and construction
- Supervise engineers and other technicians
Mechanical Engineer Qualifications
ELMO specifies that mechanical engineers who want to work in Canada must have:
- A bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline (a master's degree or doctorate may also be required)
To practice as a professional engineer-which involves approving engineering drawings and reports-mechanical engineers in Canada must be licensed by a provincial or territorial association of professional engineers.

According to ELMO, wages for mechanical engineers in Canada are highest in Alberta ($39.97/hour) and lowest in British Columbia ($36.39/hour).
