Canada Welcomes Foreign Petroleum Engineers
Under New ELMO Pilot Project
A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project makes it easier for petroleum engineers to enter Canada as temporary workers. In Canada, petroleum engineers help oil and gas companies locate and develop oil and gas deposits and then design programs to help them extract the oil and gas from the ground. In addition to oil and gas companies, petroleum engineers are also employed by research institutions, educational institutions and oil and gas service companies. Petroleum engineers typically specialize in exploration, drilling, reservoir analysis or offshore operations.
Petroleum Engineer Duties
According to ELMO, petroleum engineers in Canada typically:
- Conduct feasibility studies for new oil and gas fields
- Oversee drilling operations
- Test and monitor oil and gas wells
- Analyze reservoir reserves and design systems to maximize oil and gas extraction
- Develop forecasts for oil and gas reservoir performance
- Co-ordinate ongoing maintenance and repair of oil and gas exploration and extraction equipment
Petroleum Engineer Qualifications
ELMO specifies that petroleum engineers who want to work in Canada must have:
- A bachelor's degree in petroleum engineering or a related discipline (a master's degree or doctorate may also be required)
To practice as a professional engineerâ€"which involves approving engineering drawings and reportsâ€"petroleum engineers in Canada must be licensed by a provincial or territorial association of professional engineers.
Petroleum Engineer Wages
According to ELMO, wages for petroleum engineers are uniform across the board at $43.40/hour in all sub-regions throughout Alberta and British Columbia.
If you meet the above qualifications and would like to learn more about the ELMO pilot project and/or working as a petroleum engineer in Canada, we encourage you to visit the official ELMO web site
