Canada Welcomes Foreign Registered Nurses
Under New ELMO Pilot Project
A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project makes it easier for registered nurses to enter Canada as temporary workers. In Canada, registered nurses deliver direct nursing care in a variety of hospital departments and doctor's offices, run educational programs and serve as consultants for other health care practitioners and the general public. The pilot project covers registered nurses, nurse practitioners, psychiatric nurses and nurses involved in occupational health, community health or rehabilitation.
Registered Nurse Duties
According to ELMO, registered nurses in Canada typically:
- Collaborate with doctors and other health care providers to assess patients and determine an appropriate course of treatment
- Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by a physician
- Monitor patient conditions and intervene or report symptoms as necessary
- Operate various types of medical equipment
- Assist in various medical procedures, such as surgery or childbirth
- Supervising other nursing staff
- Educate patients and their families about various health care issues
Registered Nurse Qualifications
Registered nurses:
- Completion of an approved registered nursing training program
- Completion of additional training for specialization in a certain area (a master's degree or doctorate may also be required)
- Registration with the provincial or territorial regulatory body
- Nurse practitioners:
- A master's degree or equivalent advanced training
- Registration with the provincial or territorial regulatory body
- Registered psychiatric nurses:
- Completion of an approved registered psychiatric nursing program
- Registration with a regulatory body is required in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia
Registered Nurse Wages
According to ELMO, wages for registered nurses are fairly uniform across Alberta and British Columbia. They range from $29.36/hour in northern British Columbia to $32.87 in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
