Canada Welcomes Foreign Roofers Under New ELMO Pilot Project
A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project makes it easier for roofers to enter Canada as temporary workers. In Canada, roofers are employed by roofing companies and general contractors to repair, install or replace various types of roofing materials, such as asphalt shingles, cedar shakes and tiles.
Roofer Duties
According to ELMO, roofers in Canada typically are called upon to:
- Install, replace or repair all manner of roofing systems (shingles, shakes, tar and gravel, metal, plastic composites, etc.) on both flat and sloped roofs
- Apply waterproof coatings to concrete or masonry
- Set up scaffolding, ladders and other roofing equipment
- Operate air nailers and other power and hand tools
- Estimate and coordinate roofing jobs and deal with client concerns
- Supervise other roofing workers
Roofer Qualifications
ELMO specifies that roofers who want to work in Canada must have:
- Received a high school diploma or equivalent
- Completed a 2-3 year apprenticeship program or more than three years of supervised experience in the roofing trade
Trade certification is voluntary in every province and territory except for Quebec. Inter-provincial trade certification is also available.
Roofer Wages
According to ELMO, wages for roofers are vary considerable across Alberta and British Columbia. The highest wages are in northern Alberta ($25.22/hour) and the lowest wages in the interior of British Columbia ($18.54/hour).
