Canada Welcomes Foreign Ski and Snowboard Instructors
Under New ELMO Pilot Project
A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project makes it easier for ski and snowboard instructors to enter Canada as temporary workers. In Canada, ski and snowboard instructors teach beginners and advanced students how to ski and snowboard. They also lead individuals and groups on ski and snowboard excursions.
Ski and Snowboard Instructor Duties
According to ELMO, ski and snowboard instructors in Canada typically are called upon to:
- Prepare daily ski and snowboard lesson plans
- Demonstrate proper ski and snowboarding techniques
- Monitor student progress and attend to students with special needs
- Educate students about safety rules and enforce them when necessary
- Administer first aid when needed
- Train and supervise junior ski and snowboard instructors
- Make schedules, keep records and maintain and repair ski and snowboard equipment
Ski and Snowboard Instructor Qualifications
ELMO specifies that ski and snowboard instructors who want to work in Canada must have:
- Received a high school diploma or equivalent
- Completed a ski and snowboard instructor certification program
- Completed a first aid and/or CPR course
- Demonstrated exceptional ability as a skier and snowboarder
Ski and Snowboard Instructor Wages
According to ELMO, wages for ski and snowboard instructors vary according to region and instructor level. Level 1 instructors can expect to earn around $12/hour in Alberta and British Columbia. Level 3 instructors can earn as much as $20/hour in British Columbia's interior region, but they typically earn about $17/hour everywhere else.
