Canada Welcomes Foreign Surveyor Helpers Under New ELMO Pilot Project
A new Expedited Labor Market Opinion (ELMO) pilot project makes it easier for surveyor helpers to enter Canada as temporary workers. In Canada, surveyor helpers help surveyors by holding levels or rods at specified points to determine land elevation and laying out stakes for making maps, building roads and other survey functions. Surveying and geomatic firms, engineering consultants and construction firms are among the types of companies that employ surveyor helpers.
Surveyor Helper Duties
According to ELMO, surveyor helpers in Canada typically are called upon to:
· Assist in survey work by holding rods or levels, moving stakes and clearing brush out of the surveying path
· Marking survey points and measuring the distance between them
· Transporting tools and other equipment to and from the work site
· Cleaning and maintaining surveying equipment as needed
· Acting as a safety signaller when surveying on or near a roadway
· Performing general labour and maintenance duties
Surveyor Helper Qualifications
ELMO specifies that surveyor helpers who want to work in Canada must have:
· A high school diploma or equivalent
Most surveying companies provide on-the-job training for surveyor helpers.
Surveyor Helper Wages
According to ELMO, wages for surveyor helpers can earn anywhere between $18.30-$21.32/hour. The highest wages are available in Fort McMurray, Alberta. The lowest wages are in British Columbia's Thompson/Okanagan/Kootenay region.
