Study Permits in Canada

If you're a foreign student and you would like to study in Canada, you may need to get a study permit or a temporary resident visa from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Not every foreign student requires these documents, so before you apply for schooling, you should check to see how the regulations apply to you.

Study Permits - Applying

CIC's web site contains extensive information for foreign students that will help you determine whether or not you require a study permit, what you need to know prior to applying to study in Canada, who qualifies to study in Canada, where to find application forms and what sort of documents and fees you need to include with your application.

Study Permits - After You Apply

Once you submit your application, fees and accompanying documents, CIC will review it and determine whether or not they require any further information. In some cases, you may be requested to do an interview, have a doctor perform a medical examination or give permission for CIC to perform a background security check. Once your application is approved, you can begin making plans to come to Canada.

Study Permits - After You Arrive

The CIC web site also contains information on steps you need to take upon your arrival in Canada, the limitations of your study permit and so forth. It will also tell you how to apply to extend your stay and answer any further questions you might have.

If you plan to study in Canada, make sure you apply early for your study permit to avoid any complications or delays. For further information on applying for a study permit, please visit your nearest Canadian consulate or embassy or visit CIC's web site.
