Canada Study Permits

If you're a foreign student and you would like to study in Canada, you may need to apply for a study permit or a temporary resident visa from Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). Not every foreign student requires these documents, so before you apply for schooling, you should check to see how the regulations apply to you.

Study Permits - Before You Apply

The first thing you should do is find out how long it takes to process applications. Apply early to avoid any complications or delays. You can find all of the necessary forms and instructions at your nearest Canadian consulate or embassy. You can also download and print them for free from Citizenship and Immigration Canada's (CIC) web site. The final step before you apply is to find out which Canadian visa office services your area. You will need to send your study permit application to this office.

Study Permits - Applying

Fill out the application form and gather all of the required documents and fees. You can find a list of required documents on CIC's web site. Make sure you answer all questions carefully and type or print your answers clearing using black ink. Once you're finished, check your application for errors or omissions. Failure to do so could cause lengthy delays.

Study Permits - Additional Information

Once you submit your application, CIC will review it and determine whether or not they require any further information. In some cases, you may be requested to do an interview, have a doctor perform a medical examination or give permission for CIC to perform a security check. Once your application is approved, you can make plans to come to Canada.

For further information on applying for a study permit, please visit your nearest Canadian consulate or embassy or visit CIC's web site.
