WorkSafeBC is an organization in British Columbia (BC) dedicated to ensuring the health and safety of employers and employees in the province.
WorkSafeBC - Mandate
Working in consultation with all interested parties, WorkSafeBC educates workers about Occupational Health and Safety regulations and makes sure both they and their employers comply with them. If an employee is injured on the job, WorkSafeBC helps facilitate rehabilitation, compensation for lost pay and ensures that employees receive the proper health care benefits.
WorkSafeBC - History
Both the Workmen's Compensation Act and the Workmen's Compensation board were created in 1917. Prior to that, if a worker was injured on the job in BC, his only hope was to sue his employer. Since then, the Workmen's Compensation Board—which eventually came to be called WorkSafeBC—has worked with employers and employees to ensure safety on the job site, create workplace safety legislation, and to educate employers and workers.
WorkSafeBC - Administration
BC's Ministry of Labour and Citizen's Services appoints a seven-member board of directors to oversee WorkSafeBC. The board is composed of employees, employers and members of BC's health care and rehabilitation industries. This board helps set policy for WorkSafeBC and oversees the day-to-day function of the organization.
WorkSafeBC - Courses
WorkSafeBC offers a variety of courses and other educational resources to help promote health and safety on the job site. These include courses directed at preventing workplace accidents, reducing the likelihood of workplace violence and hazard recognition and control.
